Anionic and cationic polymers rely heavily on neutralizing an opposing charge. When a stream's charge shifts, their effectiveness can fall sharply. A nonionic polymer sidesteps that dependency. Its long chains adsorb onto particle surfaces and bridge several particles at once, forming a three-dimensional network. This makes nonionic PAM tolerant of both acidic and alkaline conditions and useful where charge-based coagulants underperform.
Longer chains reach farther and bind more particles, so higher molecular weight generally means faster settling and clearer water. Too high a molecular weight, however, can raise viscosity and make dissolution harder. The 10–15 million range balances strong bridging with practical handling.
